It's helpful to develop the habit of noticing what changes when you practice meditation. Are you a little less reactive afterward? Are you better able to focus on one thing at a time? Does your sense of self change in some way?
I encourage people to use a simple tool in their home practice I call Rate Your State. Some downloads include this tool and others don't, but you can use it any time by checking in before and after a period of meditation.
- Choose some part of your experience, like those I just mentioned–something you'd like to change or better understand.
- Before you start your practice, rate that experience in the moment from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best for you.
- Do the same after you practice to draw your attention to any shifts or insights.
